Why the name on the notice may not be the name on the box

A recall is issued in the name of the firm that is legally responsible for the product, and that is not always the brand you remember. A store-brand food is recalled by the company that packed it. A product bought from an online marketplace is recalled by the seller or importer, whose name may appear nowhere on the item. A medicine can be recalled by a repackager that supplies pharmacies.

That is why searching by the kind of product, and then comparing photos, model numbers and lot codes, finds more than searching by brand. The 11 firms with two or more notices in the current period have a page of their own; for the others, the link goes straight to the notice.

Questions and answers

Why is a well-known brand missing from this list?

The list has only firms with a CPSC or FDA notice in the last 60 days. A brand that is not listed may have older recalls: search the site of the agency for the full history.

Is the name the brand or the company?

It is the name the agency record gives. CPSC titles usually start with the brand or the seller; FDA records name the recalling firm, which may be a manufacturer or distributor whose name is not on the package. Product names are inside each notice.
